March 17 Inshore Fishing Charter Report

Dan McGonagle • March 20, 2026

On today's Fishing Report from the San Diego area, we were all catch release.  So we decided to stay close to the beach and see what was biting on the bottom. We were about a mile off of the coast and a few miles north of Mission Bay just outside of La Jolla and Pacific Beach. With rockfish still being closed in California, we often fish shallow during the closure to minimize catching too many rockfish. Any Rockfish that we do catch, we send back down to the bottom with a descending device.

San Diego Inshore Fishing Report from our Charter

We had some novice anglers aboard today so we decided to focus on fishing. You never know what you’re going to catch down there, and we ended up catching at least 10 different species throughout the four hours we were out fishing. Often it is very short travel time for inshore fishing trips, so it makes for plenty of time to soak your lines in the water and see what bites. The bait of choice today was squid and live sardines. Fortunately, with beautiful weather and minimal drift, we were able to fish with very light weights. This is key when possible because you can feel the bites much better.

Today was wide open for whitefish and rock fish, which we released all of. Nonstop action all around and everyone had a great time with fish coming over the side left and right. We also caught a few calico bass also known as kelp bass.

Rex had a double calico bass bite at one point. One bottom Fishing we always use Two hooks and different baits on each hook to see which one is working the best on any given day. Today the squid was the hot ticket, but we did have some bites on the sardines as well.

With beautiful weather and great fishing it was a wonderful day for all of us. There were only three passengers aboard, so the captain got to fish as well and had a blast fishing with the crew.

Typically, when rockfish is closed and we are fishing in shallow water it is great to use small hooks for the squid because the white fish which are very prevalent and great eating when we do. They have very small mouths so a small hook with a small piece of squid goes a long way. We use the bigger hooks for the sardines because generally you catch bigger fish. All in all a great day in the water with great people.

We'd love to take your crew if you're looking for a San Diego Fishing Charter - call today to get hooked!
