TUNA FISHING CHARTER OUT OF SAN DIEGO, CA

FROM Captain DAn of Fish Further Charters:

The best part about fishing tuna for me is the hunt. I get up in my tuna tower with my binoculars, and I can see up to 5 miles for bird schools, fish on the surface, kelp patties, sonar fish, or anything on the surface that looks out of the normal. I am very good at finding my own fish away from other boats, using my eyes and my electronics. It's one of those skills you simply learn over time with countless hours being a tuna fishing charter in San Diego.

What we normally catch out tuna fishing are yellow tuna, and bluefin tuna, which are local to our waters.  They are great to eat, to say the least.  Whether it be seared sesame seed tuna on the grill or fresh raw DIY poke’ bowls; you can’t go wrong with tuna. It’s also great for canning or for the best tuna salad ever.  Did I say we like eating tuna around here?

To catch tuna around San Diego, we use numerous tuna fishing methods including:

  • Trolling
  • Live bait fishing
  • Fly-lining
  • Casting and kite fishing.

For fising tuna, we like to troll lures like Spreader bars, Mad Mack’s or Laser minnows.  They swim fast and are a very aggressive target for tuna. When fishing tuna with live bait, we often use sardines.   It all depends on the day on the water.

We also cast many different lures such as Poppers, Stick baits, Surface Irons, and Hydro Colt Snipers.

SAn Diego TUna Charter Info

Tuna fishing mainly happens offshore. There have been occasions where it has been in range to catch them on a half day trip, but not often.

Generally, we run our tuna charters as close as 5 miles and as far as about 60 miles from San Diego. The time of year and how close they are at any given time depends on current water temperatures and other factors. Tennessee and San Diego are generally April through October. Once the water cools down the fish go deep or farther south to find the warmer water.

Bluefin tuna in both California and Mexico is two fish per person per day. Yellowfin tuna is 10 fish per day in California, and five fish per day in Mexico.

Luan tuna are fierce fighters and we catch them anywhere from 10 pounds to 250 pounds. When we see the bigger fish, we mainly troll or use the kite to catch them on heavier gear. The smaller ones are bait fishing friendly, and we hook them on live sardines.

We catch them all over the water column anywhere from on the surface all the way down to about 250 feet. Ideally, we want to bring them up to the surface or have them on the surface feeding to hook them.
