The plan was to catch some Vermilion rock fish among other species and then head in shallow for some home guard yellowtail. We shot up about 11 miles north and only a few miles off of La Jolla to catch our limit of rockfish and then went in to troll for some yellowtail about a mile off the beach.

Bottom Fishing with swim baits and sardines is the best method to catch rock fish. We were fishing anywhere from 150 to 250 feet today and the bite was good. After that, we got in the trollers out for yellowtail. Within about 10 minutes, we were doubled up on the rapalas. We got them both in the boat and they weighed 32 and 37 pounds. Monster local yellowtail! What a fight these fish are. Nothing like it.

What fishing methods did you use today? Feel free to use a little "guide speak" on this too. Let's say you're "trolling". Maybe instead, describe HOW you trolled that day. What kind of gear are you using, baits, hard baits, etc.

Inshore Fishing is always productive For rockfish as I have some secret spots that not many other boats know about. We can usually catch our limit of Vermilion, rockfish and load up on other species as well.

The catch of the day was the California yellowtail Jack. One of the hardest fighting fish in the world, Especially when they are the local home guards. The big fish live in La Jolla. With Calm seas in clear skies, It was an all-around epic day on the water, and we filled the bag.

The trick to catching the bigger rock fish is to use large swim baits. Often most captains use small pieces of squid, and you have to pick away at the smaller fish. Using bigger swim, baits, and larger sardines enables you to only hook the larger fish which are down there. All in all an Epic half-day Fishing Charter in San Diego.

March 17 Inshore Fishing Charter Report

On this fishing report near San Diego, we take a group of beginners for a wild trip. Over 10 fish species caught and we lost track of the numbers.

On today's Fishing Report from the San Diego area, we were all catch release. So we decided to stay close to the beach and see what was biting on the bottom. We were about a mile off of the coast and a few miles north of Mission Bay just outside of La Jolla and Pacific Beach. With rockfish still being closed in California, we often fish shallow during the closure to minimize catching too many rockfish. Any Rockfish that we do catch, we send back down to the bottom with a descending device.

We had some novice anglers aboard today so we decided to focus on fishing. You never know what you’re going to catch down there, and we ended up catching at least 10 different species throughout the four hours we were out fishing. Often it is very short travel time for inshore fishing trips, so it makes for plenty of time to soak your lines in the water and see what bites. The bait of choice today was squid and live sardines. Fortunately, with beautiful weather and minimal drift, we were able to fish with very light weights. This is key when possible because you can feel the bites much better.

Today was wide open for whitefish and rock fish, which we released all of. Nonstop action all around and everyone had a great time with fish coming over the side left and right. We also caught a few calico bass also known as kelp bass.

Rex had a double calico bass bite at one point. One bottom Fishing we always use Two hooks and different baits on each hook to see which one is working the best on any given day. Today the squid was the hot ticket, but we did have some bites on the sardines as well.

With beautiful weather and great fishing it was a wonderful day for all of us. There were only three passengers aboard, so the captain got to fish as well and had a blast fishing with the crew.

Typically, when rockfish is closed and we are fishing in shallow water it is great to use small hooks for the squid because the white fish which are very prevalent and great eating when we do. They have very small mouths so a small hook with a small piece of squid goes a long way. We use the bigger hooks for the sardines because generally you catch bigger fish. All in all a great day in the water with great people.

Solid Rockfish Fishing Out of San Diego into Mexico

We had a solid day of fishing for Rockfish just inside of Mexico waters. No passport needed, only a Mexico license.

Steve comes out with us a few times a year, anytime family and friends come into town. They wanted to load up on Rockfish for tacos so we went about 12 miles down into Mexican waters just across the border. Passports are not required for these trips. All we need is a Mexican fishing license. It’s a great option during the winter when rockfish is a closed in California. Steve has been out catching these critters with me numerous times and he learned it was best to buy a commercial vacuum sealer to handle all the Processing on his own. A vacuum sealer is a great tool to have when hunting or fishing as it will keep your Bounty fresh for up to a year in the freezer. These rock fish can be cooked in so many different ways and are one of the most tasty fish. We can catch out here.

The goal was to catch our limit of rockfish so we focused on bottom Fishing only in about 350 feet of water until we had limits which is 10 fish per person and some for the crew. For Bait, we were using swim baits and live sardines with two hooks on each dropper rig. Double the bites. We used to use squid, but it often gets picked off the hooks and I have found that the large swim baits get bit better anyways.

When Fishing rock fish out at the 9 mile bank just off the coastline it is generally great fishing For these delicious taco stuffers. We have numerous spots and sometimes they bite right off the bat and sometimes we have to search around a little bit but once we find that lucky rock it’s game time.

We end of the day with about 28 bocaccio, 3 vermillion and a bonus 28” lingcod. Lingcod are also out in these deep water rock spots as well and we catch them very often. They put up quite a fight.

We had very calm seas today and Therefore, we did not have to use heavy weights to keep our baits down at the bottom. I always tried to start with the lightest weight as possible and put on some heavier ones if necessary to stay down at the bottom and not scope out the line too much.

The best type of knot For bottom, Fishing is the dropper loop knot. It is very quick and easy to tie, and it makes for quick hook removal when dealing with tangles, which happened often with 4+ anglers with lines at the bottom. Pulling the hook off, makes handling the tangles 10 times easier and then you can simply pop them back on and get back to Fishing with minor re-rigging.

Latest Inshore Fishing Report Near San Diego

We took a first timer out fishing today near San Diego. To say he was hooked would be an understatement. We love taking kids fishing.

Today we had some very young kids aboard, so we decided to stay close to land and focus on some smaller fish for the kids. We were only about a mile off the beach fishing in La Jolla, San Diego, California. What a beautiful view of San Diego from the outside on our inshore coastal charters. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather with a storm rolling in the next day.

We focused on bottom Fishing only to keep the young men interested with a rod in their hand or in the Rod holder at all times with their baits in the water. Basically, we dropped our lines with our baits all the way to the bottom, Which in today’s case was about 80 to 100 feet of water, And wait for the bite, as we drift. Often, if the current is rushing, we drop anchor on some of our favorite spots.

Typically, inshore shallow bottom fishing is very productive for anything from calico bass sand, bass rock, fish halibut, lingcod white fish, sheep, head, shark, sculpin, and sometimes even shallow water yellowtail. Usually, it’s nonstop action on multiple species, keeping the crew and kids in this case excited. This trip was all catch and release.

What an epic trip. Elliot a long time friend and Client, who has been fishing with us for years, decided to bring his 4 year old son out this time, who had an absolute blast catching fish nonstop. He was scared to hold them at first, but we talked to him into it and man did he love it. Take your kids fishing and they will be hooked for life.

Fishing Cod Inside Mexican Waters Near San Diego

On this fishing trip, we went cod fishing across the Mexican border. Our charter had a great time and caught a lot of fish this day.

With rockfish being closed in California waters until April, we decided to go about 12 miles from the bay around San Diego into Mexican Waters to load up on delicious cod. It’s nice to be able to fish on both sides of the border when something’s closed on the California side. Mexico also has higher limits for certain species of rockfish like Vermilion. We can keep five in Mexico and only two in California when it is open to fish.

Rockfish live anywhere on the bottom from 100 feet or deeper. With that in mind, we are always bottom fishing for these types of fish. Most of my spots are anywhere between 200 and 400 feet, but I try to fish as shallow as possible to minimize reeling them up. Sometimes they are biting deeper and sometimes shallower, depends on the outing and time of year. Bottom fishing consist of a two-hook set up where we can fish two different baits all the way on the bottom with a lead weight to get us down there.

Today, we used swim baits and sardines as our bait.

Bottom fishing for rockfish is normally a very productive way to catch a lot of fish. We like to bounce around to all our different spots until we find one that is biting the best. Then, we bang out that spot until we load up on fish. Sometimes it takes some searching, and sometimes the rock we left a few days before is instantly biting. That's fishing.

and Junior had a blast catching fish on his first time on the ocean. He was beyond excited about every fish she pulled over the side. It’s so rewarding to see kids so stoked on fishing!

We had beautiful weather in January as it normally is here in San Diego. It’s almost always a good day to get on the water. I guess that's life with a San Diego Fishing charter.

The most popular knot that we use for rock fishing is the dropper loop knot. It makes it very easy to pop the hooks off in the event of a tangle which does happen ofte

On this family fishing adventure, we were no farther than 5 miles from the jetty...aka, close. Sometimes you don’t need to go too far to fill the freezer.

The fishing techniques used in this fishing charter today were trolling, jigging with lures, and bottom fishing with live bait and swim baits.

We started off the trip targeting Bonito so they can make some fresh poke bowls. If you don't know, you should! We caught about 10 to 15 and released all except three within about an hour. Bonito is great fresh, but not as good when frozen. It is also very tasty smoked.

After that, we found the hot rockfish rock and we caught limits of vermillion rockfish. It was hot and heavy, and we even released a bunch. Also, there were a bunch of bocaccio and some other fish species in the mix.

Overall, a great fishing trip with a great family. They filled the freezer for the winter.

This was our second swordfish of the season caught by our fishing charter. Today, we were fishing the 9-mile bank, which is 12 miles off of the beach. One of our local banks that commonly holds swordfish and other species around this time of the season.

We were fishing using a deep drop method of fishing, using heavy weights, electric, fishing rails, and large squid as bait. If you've never tried it, it's a unique style of fishing for Swordfish, or in general.

Swordfish can be difficult in terms of waiting time. Sometimes you have to put in a lot of time to get a bite and you’re basically fishing in the dark. But trust me, it’s all well and worth it once you do get that bite. And at that point, you're going to battle with the gladiator of the sea!

This was a great trip with my dad and my good friend John, who recently had a stroke and it was great to get them on the water and tight on a swordfish. This swordfish weighed 235 pounds on the scale.

My dad heard Elvis was biting, so he jumped on a plane from Rhode Island and flew in Sunday afternoon to give some chartered fishing a go.

Our San Diego fishing charter took off Monday morning, and after a few drifts, we were slack at 1:45 pm.

We followed the fish for about 7 miles, and had her tail wrapped and gaffed at about 9:10 pm. After slapping hands, we scratched our heads for a few minutes trying to figure out how we were going to get this monster in the boat.

We spent 45 minutes trying to get it in to the boat and then on to the swim platform. We were ready to give up and drag the fish in at 10:00 at night. A fun 4-hour ride back to the barn.

Out of nowhere, San Diego Air and Marine Operations flips the blue lights on right next to us trying to figure out what we’re doing in the middle of nowhere. We explained our situation and they were more than willing to come aboard and help us. The four of us were able to drag the fish into the boat together.

We are so stoked they came along and so grateful for their help. Would have been a very long ride home without them. Fish of a lifetime and experience of a lifetime for my dad and I.

On this 4-hour San Diego Fishing Charter, we left the jetty’s and we went about 5 miles north to La Jolla. We tried many shallow water spots and fishing was slow at first, but then decided to try deeper for some rock cod.

Today, we were bottom fishing using live sardines and juicy swim baits.

           Rock cod candy.

Due to the calm conditions we were able to use light weight to stay down at the bottom.

We caught many large size rock cod and a stand out trophy lingcod!

Wyatt’s goal was to catch a lingcod and towards the end of the trip he landed a monster 20 pounder. He was so pumped and it made his week!

Deep Water Rockfish Fishing Report

We took our guests on a guided fishing trip outside of San Diego, CA for a nice bag of rockfish for the table. Come fishing for rockfish with Fish Further Charters.

This was a 1/2 day fishing trip that we went out 12 miles for deep water rockfish. Shallow water rockfish is currently closed in San Diego, CA, and we are required to fish over 300 ft, where the big ones live.

On this guided fishing trip, we were bottom fishing using squid, live sardines and plastic swim baits.

It is generally great fishing for rock cod out in the deep water and on this trip, we caught limits of delicious cod, great for tacos and ceviche. If you've never had FRESH ceviche on these fish...you're missing out!

The crew was very satisfied by the end of the fishing trip with a full bag of fish and some standouts like a big lingcod. Crazy how these fish are either brown, green, or blue in color depending on where they live.

Deep Water Rock Fish Outing - San Diego Fishing Charter Report

We went fishing with rock fish on the menu, but also got into some nice bluefin tuna as well around San Diego. Call today to join us.

On today’s half day fishing charter, we went 12 miles out to the nine mile bank to fish deep water rock fish. It is closed shoreward of 300 ft currently and the only way to load up on taco meat is to get in the deeper water...

We were bottom fishing using swim baits and live sardines and ended up doing some trolling and casting as well.

Fishing the deep water rock fish this time of year is very effective and a great way to load up on delicious rock cod at our secret spots.

When we got to the fishing zone, we did our fishing seminar and dropped our lines down to the bottom. As soon as we made it to the bottom and I had a minute to take a look around, I noticed large bird schools all outside of us about a mile. With that being said we reeled in and went to investigate.

Once we made it into the bird school area, we noticed bluefin jumping around everywhere on the surface and we’re seeing them all over the sonar. Once we started casting into them, we hooked one and realized they were large. We then decided to put the heavy gear out with the trolling lures, and we managed to land three bluefin tuna and lost another two within about an hour. We were loaded up with three bluefin up to 100 pounds within two hours of starting our trip. We rounded the trip off with some rockfish and headed to the dock to meet the fish processor. What an epic half day. You never know what you’re going to catch out there!

San Diego Fishing Report - Fishing Remains Solid

Due to bad weather, we made some fishing adjustments and ended up with a great day on the water. Come fish San Diego with Captain Dan.

We departed Mission Bay and intended on fishing inshore but instead we decided to go to San Diego Bay due to bad weather. While there, we targeted halibut, bass, and sharks. It was flat calm, beautiful conditions inside of the bay.

Inside of San Diego Bay, we were bottom fishing using live sardines. It is the best type of bait to use for halibut.

When fishing San Diego Bay, we are mainly targeting halibut, sharks, and different species of bass.

On this San Diego fishing trip, we caught:

            Numerous spotted bay bass

            A couple sharks

Three short halibut that were not legal to keep

A legal sand bass in the standout which we had to release was an endangered giant black Seabass, that weighed about 60 pounds. What a fight this was.

We had to remove the fish from the water to snap a quick photo and more importantly, get the hook out of its mouth to release it properly and safely and let it swim another day. We had it out of the water for under 20 seconds and got it back in and watched it swim right away.

If you'd like a day on the water with an experienced San Diego fishing charter; give Captain Dan and Fish Furthers a shout!

just off the coast of Tijuana, Mexico. It’s about 20 miles down to the nearest island and just under a 1 hour ride cruising at 25 kts.

The crew wanted to focus on fishing bottom species to load up on taco meat. With that task at hand, we were on our way to bottom fishing with two hooks per rod using squid, swim baits, shrimp, and live anchovy as bait. Everything was getting lots of bites.

If you want to load up on bottom fish, the Coronados Islands are the place. Always good fishing action at many of my numerous secret spots, and often there are also yellowtail, bluefin tuna, and some other game fish; around although we did not see any on this chartered trip.

The crew wanted to catch a lingcod and a sheepshead so I took them to some of my secret rocks and we ended up with 2 lingcod and 3 sheepshead as well! They were stoked! We left the islands with passenger limits and a few extra for the captain. 25 fish and 10 different species were caught. Overall, a great day on the water with great weather and great people.

Fishing Report - Sept 29 - Offshore to Mexican Waters

On our latest fishing report near San Diego, we traveled offshore south to Mexican waters in search of big bluefin tuna.

This chartered fishing trip was 30-40 miles southwest from San Diego region into Mexican waters.

We mostly used trolling spreader bars because we knew there were big fish around and it’s the best way to hook them on heavy gear. We also did some casting and live bait fishing.

Lately, we are getting in the zone where the fish are at and trolling until we see them on the surface eating anchovy and dragging the spreader bars right over the the fish splashing around on the surface. We are also fishing live baits on kelp patty’s and casting on fish we see on the surface. Sight fishing can be a blast!

March was a great time to get out on a local Sad Diego Half day fishing charter to catch a trophy yellowtail. april should be a banger also while we wait for the tuna to show up. rockfish also opened in california on april 1 so there is plenty of oppurtunity to load catch multiple species.

Offshore fishing charters have been producing nice grade california yellowtail, and dorado, as well as bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna. at the islands, we have been catching yellowtail, calico bass, barracuda, and the OCCASIONAL tuna. inshore trips have been great bottom fishing for rock fish, sheep head, calico bass, barracuda, sculpin, and sometimes halibut.
